The printing methods that I'm using speak of some of the first printers for personal computers - dot matrix printers. These printers were widely used in the 1970's into the 1990's. They operate much like a typewriter, with an ink ribbon that is impacted. You can hear the strike of each dot produced by this printer. This is a stark contrast to the seamlessly quiet printers of today, and illustrates a different era in which the printing process was automated yet still mechanical.
I've created designs using paint programs on obsolete computers, and have printed the them using an Image Writer II dot matrix printer from the 1980's. I have intentionally printed them quite small, and then scanned them so that they can be printed at a larger scale in order to see the dots that make up each image.
